The history of this train turned tourist attraction
Although the Artouste train is now much sought-after by passing travellers, it was not originally designed to carry tourists.
Indeed, when Abbé Ludovic Gaurier discovered the lake of the same name at the end of the 19th century, the Compagnie des Chemins de fer du Midi saw an opportunity to electrify the tracks in order to link several hydroelectric power stations in the Ossau valley.
The workers then took this rail route to the lake, to bring in equipment and finish the dam on Lake Artouste.
It wasn't until the project was completed in 1930 that the Compagnie du Midi opened the site to the general public by building a cable car. It soon became a must-see attraction for thousands of visitors every summer.
